Alex Beard Studio: "Not What You Expect" Sep 20-30, 2007

昨天去了位于SoHo区的Alex Beard Studio的新展开幕。得知这个展实属偶然，是因为在这个星期二的一个晚餐派对上遇到了一个雕塑家/画家，Stephan Fowlkes，他是这次展览的四名艺术家中的领衔人物。一开始我并没有太在意，因为在布鲁克林的威廉姆斯伯格小区 (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)基本就是广告牌砸倒三个其中一个是艺术家的感觉（另外一个是做音乐的，还有一个是无业游民）。当他谈到自己曾学习禅宗时，我也有些不以为然，心想鬼子为了赶时髦都爱扯异域文化，其实吗也不懂。他也说到他的英雄是Isamu Noguchi，曾在法国看过很多他的作品。主要还是说如何使艺术家打破画廊/拍卖行霸市的问题，因为我们在自己筹展也是在这方面的努力，他作为艺术家自然有不少牢骚。但他也说互联网和信息共享为艺术家们提供了前所未有的被人看到的机会（visibility）。我邀请他去看我们的展览，他开玩笑说，除非我先去看他的展。因为地点离我上班地点很近，所以我决定去遛一眼。

应该说，我是颇惊喜了一下。一般来说我对画廊不抱太大希望，觉得切尔西（Chelsea）展的东西大多要么没人看得出名堂，要么装饰性很强（艺术院校的人 好像普遍觉得切尔西80-90%的展是烂展）。不过昨天居然看到好几个我觉得值得品味的作品，值得推荐。尤其是Stephan Fowlkes的作品，令我刮目相看了一下。他的作品都是木制雕塑，有挂置在墙上大至48"x48"的，也有多维和较小型的，所用木料全部是从Williamsburg的垃圾堆捡来的，作为他记录这个小区变迁的历史见证。他受禅宗和道家思想的影响可以在作品中明显的感觉到，简约和平衡展示了他对“大音希声，大象无形”“大美无言，妙道自然”的领会（后面这句也是老子说的吧）。这样的领会不是肤浅的借用一些文化符号作装点，而是体现在了他的作品的造型和质感上，他的几件挂雕甚至颇有几分沉稳内敛的“大气”，这不同于一般西方艺术作品的“庄严感”，尤其难得。在他自己的陈述中他说，

“My respect for Nature comes from studies of Eastern philosophy—Zen and Taoism—and of the Transcendentalists. This spirituality is developed and emphasized through use of natural materials, letting the material largely speak for itself.

Simplicity and balance are two driving forces in my work: creating tension and resolution visually, a balance between order and chaos in both Man and Nature through the integration of a geometric language with the natural properties of the material. The work also addresses the mechanics of interpersonal dynamics, as seen through the lens of Jungian archetypes—the circle and square, representing the female and male…”
